Saved widgets are private template backups in your Preen account. Save a widget explicitly, then restore it as a new copy on another signed-in Mac. They are separate from public community publishing and do not require Private Relay. Buying Plus or creating a local widget never uploads your library.
Save a template
- Sign in to your Preen account on the Mac. New saves require active Preen Plus, from the website or a linked App Store purchase.
- Open Browse widgets → Saved and follow Review private storage notice. Accept the notice in your browser, then return to the Mac and refresh.
- Choose a supported local widget and use Review source… to check for passwords, API keys, personal information or other sensitive text before choosing Save to account. Unsupported widgets are labeled and disabled.
- Confirm the upload. Later explicit saves of that local widget update the same backup; Save as a separate backup creates another saved widget.
You can also ask your connected agent to save a widget. The agent must have your instruction to upload it, and cannot accept the browser storage notice for you.
What is saved
A backup includes the name, HTML with embedded CSS and JavaScript, a supported text icon (SF Symbol or emoji), refresh setting and source attribution. It does not include live feeds, widget databases, environment variables, account or pairing credentials, local scripts, execution permissions or separate images. Credentials or personal data hardcoded into the HTML are included. External assets are not fetched or bundled.
Widgets with local actions or separate PNG icons cannot be saved in this version. Keep their original local files; the service does not silently strip required actions or images and call the result a complete backup.
Preen stores source over HTTPS. The platform does not execute it or publish it. Storage is not end-to-end encrypted: Preen and its infrastructure providers process readable source to store and return it. Private backups are not used for Preen or provider training, evaluation, embeddings or model improvement. If you download through your own AI client, that client receives the source under your agreement with its provider. See the Privacy Policy.
Browse, download and restore
On the Mac, the Saved tab lists saved templates and local version status. Use the refresh button to check the current account library. Checking does not upload changes or install newer code. There is no automatic synchronization.
Choose Restore new copy to download a verified revision and create a new local widget. Existing widgets remain unchanged. A restore does not recover live data, databases or action permissions. Reconnect any external data producer separately. The local widget limit still applies.
On the website, open Account → Saved widgets
to browse, download a template as JSON, or delete a backup. Downloading does
not install or execute the template. An agent can use download_saved_widget
to inspect source or restore_saved_widget to restore it, optionally selecting
a retained revision number. The API exposes retained revision metadata;
the first release does not include an in-app history picker.
Limits and history
| Allowance | Limit |
|---|---|
| Saved widgets | 50 per account |
| One revision | 1 MiB |
| Retained history | Latest 10 revisions per widget |
| Total storage | 10 MiB per account, including retained revisions |
Limits count serialized template bytes. Each changed save creates a revision; saving unchanged content against the current revision does not add history. Older revisions are pruned when a new revision takes their place. Storage is independent of the five Mac hub and five remote display allowances.
Two Macs, conflicts and interrupted saves
If another Mac has saved a newer revision, a stale save is refused. Review the newer copy, restore it as a new local widget, or explicitly save your local work as a separate backup. Preen does not merge HTML or replace your edits silently.
If a request times out, the Mac retains that attempt’s source and retry identifier privately. The next explicit Save checks whether it succeeded; if needed, it resends the same source with the same identifier before saving your latest local edits as a new revision. This prevents a duplicate backup without discarding edits made after the interruption. A separate backup can be created after resolving the earlier attempt.
Subscription lapse and deletion
When Plus ends, you can still list, download, restore and delete existing backups. New uploads require active Plus. Declining a revised storage notice also preserves retrieval and deletion of existing backups. Local widgets keep working independently.
Deleting a backup removes its source and retained revisions from the live service; local copies remain. Deleting a local widget does not delete its backup. Account deletion removes private backups and revokes account access. See the Privacy Policy for metadata and infrastructure retention. Keep another copy of code you need: this is bounded template history, not a full Mac backup.
